From the early days of Coffee Bean International, our goal has been to deliver the best quality coffee with minimal impact to the environment. Our new state-of-the-art LEED® Silver certified roastery is the latest example of how we continue to integrate artisan roasting with the most current best practices in sustainability and efficiency.

LEED® Silver Certification

Coffee Bean International is the first roastery in the Northwest to achieve LEED® Silver Certification. This means that our facility is third-party certified for meeting the highest green building and performance standards, including reduced waste sent to landfills, energy and water conservation, reduced emissions, and overall environmental stewardship. Come take a tour to learn (and see!) all of the ways we’ve used existing or recycled building materials and how we’ve significantly reduced our use of natural gas and water, in addition to lowering our emissions.

Energy Reduction

As we all know by now, lowering energy usage is a crucial component of operating a more sustainable business. Through the installation of Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTO) on our roasters, we have reduced our natural gas usage 60%! Additionally, all lighting throughout our facility is set on motion sensors and thanks to just-in-time manufacturing, our machines are only in operation (and using energy) when they need to be. As part of our partnership approach, we also work with our clients to partner in ways to take steps to reduce their energy bills.

Waste Reduction

We are continuously evaluating how to reduce (or eliminate) our total landfill contribution. At Coffee Bean International, we have on-site recycling and composting programs where we currently recycle all paper, food, and coffee waste. Additionally, we work with local recycling programs and partners in order to find second uses for our burlap bags and other raw materials containers.

Emissions Reduction

The same Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTO) that have drastically cut our natural gas usage also serve to “clean” smoke that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. Our wastewater is collected and redistributed to our native plants and landscaping onsite and routed away from local streams and waterways. And what kind of Pacific Northwest business would we be if we didn’t actively provide incentives to our employees for riding their bikes, carpooling, or taking mass transit to and from work?
